Addition for the client's mom
The client wanted to build a home addition for her mother—something connected to the main house but offering privacy and independence. Her mother has progressing dementia and may require a wheelchair in the near future. To fund the addition, the client sold her mother’s previous home and invested the proceeds into this project. Why is this an investment? By increasing the livable square footage, the overall value of the property also increases. We started by working closely with the client on sketches, design, and documentation. Every detail was planned with her mother’s specific needs in mind. All hallways and doorways are wide enough for a wheelchair. The bathroom includes an accessible toilet and roll-in shower. We added custom locks, handrails, and other aging-in-place features. The space is about 410 square feet—a compact studio without a full kitchen, just a tea station and a bathroom. We passed over ten inspections, including those for the foundation, framing, insulation, roofing, and even down to choosing the perfect color for drawer handles to match the living space. An interesting twist? The client is a dachshund breeder and has lots of dogs! We worked together for nearly a year on this project. Along the way, we became friends and had a great time collaborating and enjoying the process.
